The fierce rivalry on the hardwood between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville isn't just for hoops. The ninth annual 'Gift of Life Challenge' between the Cats and the Cards is off and running as each school competes for the most number of newly registered Kentucky residents on the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. The winning school will receive a trophy at the men's basketball game on Jan. 2nd at Rupp Arena.
 
This life saving competition will hopefully affect more than 740 Kentucky residents on the waiting list for an organ or tissue transplant. Currently, there are over 104,000 people on the national waiting list and every day approximately 18 people die while waiting because an organ did not become available in time to save their life.

Frank X Walker - co-founder of the Affrilachian Poets, widely published writer, founder of a journal of Affrilachian culture, and recipient of numerous writing and teaching awards - will join the faculty of the University of Kentucky in January 2010. Walker has accepted a position in the UK College of Arts and Sciences Department of English, where he will teach in the Creative Writing Program as an associate professor. As he returns to his alma mater, Walker will also bring with him Pluck! The Journal of Affrilachian Arts and Culture, which he founded in 2007.

“The college is thrilled Frank will be joining the English department and bringing with him expertise in Affrilachia,” said Mark Lawrence Kornbluh, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Frank’s multidisciplinary approach, focused in an area often unexplored, is one that will benefit our students, the college and the university greatly.”

Walker, who originated the word “Affrilachia” to describe the culture of African Americans living in the Appalachian region, is a UK alumnus. He graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in English and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Spalding University in Louisville. Walker has held academic positions at the University of Louisville, Eastern Kentucky University and Transylvania University. He comes to the UK faculty following an appointment as Writer-In-Residence at Northern Kentucky University.

Walker is the author of five books, including “When Winter Come: The Ascension of York” (2008), “Black Box” (2006), “Buffalo Dance: The Journey of York” (2004), “Affrilachia” (2000) and “Eclipsing a Nappy New Millenium” (1997). He edited the 2007 anthology “America! What’s My Name,” and has published four chapbooks, entries in five additional books of poetry, and numerous journal and magazine entries and essays.

Walker has served as founder and executive director of the Bluegrass Black Arts Consortium, the program coordinator of the University of Kentucky's Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center and the assistant director of Purdue University's Black Cultural Center.  He was awarded an honorary doctorate by UK in 2000, and by Transylvania University in 2002.

He was the recipient of the 2006 Thomas D. Clark Literary Award for Excellence, the 2005 Lannan Literary Fellowship in Poetry and the Actors Theatre Keeper of the Chronicle Award. (more)

The Blood Challenge will be at all KBC blood drives and fixed site donation centers throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky. At every drive and donor center, donors will cast a vote for their favorite team and get a commemorative T-shirt (while supplies last). In late May 2009, Hazel Ledford shared her 90th birthday with students from the University of Kentucky Honors Program. Ledford, who is a UK graduate from the class of 1940, enjoyed sharing stories of her time at the university with the students, many of whom will graduate in 2011. The students spent three weeks in the Somerset area for a class entitled “Living Mindfully in the Natural World,” an Honors Program pro-seminar centered on self-discipline, gardening, and healthy living.

First United Methodist Church, Somerset, Ky., was the site of the first birthday celebration given by Ledford’s four daughters, two of whom attended UK. It was followed by a celebration at Slate Branch Retreat House where the students stayed for the duration of their class. Emily Pellegrini, one of the UK students present at the party, said “I enjoyed talking with Hazel Ledford and learning from her experiences and wisdom.” Dr. Sonya Jones, the instructor of the class, arranged the event.

Beshear was elected to the Kentucky Legislature in 1974 and served until 1979. He was elected attorney general in 1979 and lieutenant governor in 1983. Beshear graduated from UK with a pre-law degree in 1966 and a Law degree in 1968. While a student, he was Student Government president and president of his law school class. He participated in many activities including the Lafferty Law Society, Moot Court Team and Phi Beta Kappa. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Perdue was sworn in as the first female governor of North Carolina in 2009. Before running for election, she served two terms in the state house of representatives, five terms in the state senate and two terms as the first female lieutenant governor of the state. While a student, Perdue was rush chairman of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, a 1969 Homecoming attendant and a member of UK Student Government. The College of Arts and Sciences inducted Perdue into its Hall of Fame in 2006.

Strickland was elected governor in 2006. Before being elected governor, he served five terms of office in the U.S. Congress. During his career, he has served as a minister, a psychologist and a college professor. He earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1966 and a doctoral degree in education and counseling psychology from the UK College of Education in 1980. The college recognized him with induction into the College of Education Hall of Fame in 2000.

"The UK Alumni Expert Network is an innovative initiative designed to be a tremendous resource for Kentucky’s small businesses which are the backbone of our local communities," said UK President Lee T. Todd Jr. "This is another great example of how UK alumni are dedicated to giving back to the Commonwealth."

More than 100 alumni, each with at least 10 years of business experience, have completed an online profile and been approved to participate in the network. Each expert has agreed to provide up to 10 hours of free consulting each year with a maximum of two hours of free telephone and e-mail consulting per business. After the initial two hours, the expert and the business may enter into an extended agreement. Any of Kentucky’s small business employers and owners or any Kentucky-based entrepreneur can find an alumni expert by searching the more than 2,100 expert topic areas at www.ukyexperts.net and filling out an online request. "It is critical to the economic prosperity of Kentucky, especially in our current economic climate, that entrepreneurs who are starting new businesses and existing small businesses succeed," said Len Heller, UK’s vice president for Commercialization and Economic Development. "We believe the UK Alumni Expert Network will be a major component of making small businesses across the Bluegrass State successful."

According to the latest Kentucky small business profile published by the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, Kentucky had 70,785 small business employers in 2006, representing 97 percent of the state’s employers. Small businesses in Kentucky created 60 percent of the state’s new net jobs from 2004 to 2005.

The UK Alumni Expert Network is a partnership between the UK Office for Commercialization and Economic Development and the UK Alumni Association.

“I feel the emotion of this event,” remarked Provost Kumble R. Subbaswamy. “In the American system of higher education, the university is an extended family. These kinds of affirmations are very important. It is extraordinary when a university has this degree of affection and appreciation as I have heard today.“

Each of the alumni shared memories, and some offered advice to current students. Also attending were faculty, staff and friends from Lexington they have known throughout the years.

A recurring theme in the stories shared was that the people of Kentucky “made us feel quite at home and showed us generosity.”

One alumnus recalls his annual stipend of $1,500 that left $129 a month for expenses. Grocery stores did not have many of the ingredients called for in the recipes from home so lentils became a mainstay in adapting to the situation. A professor introduced his student to the waiters of a restaurant near campus, “This is my student from India. He and his friends will be eating here so I want you to meet him.” All recalled Wednesday night gatherings of international students at the home of alumna Harriet Van Meter who founded the International Book Project.

Advice to students included, “Don’t make a little India here. Kentuckians are very nice people. Find ways to give back. You contribute and you become what? You become inter-American.”

Donna Kelly who was on the international affairs staff helped students get acclimated to the ways of this country, set up speakers and picnics and helped in every way needed. She commented, “I thank you for how you all enriched the lives of me and my family. We had the world in our hearts.”

One of the students who spoke to the group about the activities of today’s international students on campus, said “Fifty years from now, I will come back and I will definitely start my story from this date.”

Myra Tobin, a member of the Cosmopolitan Club as a student, invited three of her friends from India home for Thanksgiving dinner. “My mom was fascinated with cooking the food they brought. It was so good.”

Many of the students were befriended by Warren Sawyer and his family. “The doll that was given to me when we moved away from Lexington has set on our fireplace mantel or piano since we left. It reminds me constantly of our dear friends around the world.”

The event was organized by professors Paul Karan and Avinash Sathya, and Tobin, a former board member of the UK Board of Trustees and the UK Alumni Association where she also served as president. The group enjoyed a campus tour, and then dinner as the guests of the provost.

From less than a dozen students in 1959, there are currently 312 students enrolled from India.

2009 UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award Recipients Announced

The UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Awards are presented annually to honor and recognize alumni of the University of Kentucky who have provided extraordinary service to the university and the association. The 2009 recipients were honored during the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors Summer Workshop in Lexington.

The 2009 recipients are: Ted Arlinghaus, Susan Mountjoy, Dr. John Clements, Tonya Bumm Parsons, and W. Cleland White III. Marsha Wallis, a 2008 recipient, was also honored.

Arlinghaus of Edgewood has been an active member of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati UK Alumni Club for several years. He is always willing to lend a hand or financially support the club’s activities. He has served on the club’s board of directors, as well as serving as club president and on several committees including Scholarship, Diversity and Golf. He has worked to secure corporate sponsorship for the club’s golf outing. Arlinghaus is a 1972 graduate with a degree in accounting and a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association. He and his wife, Janet, have 10 children, and several attend UK.  He loves the Wildcats. He even built a gym onto his house and called it ‘Rupp Arena North!”

Mountjoy of Louisville has been a leader with the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club for over 25 years. She has served on its board of directors and as chairwoman of many events and activities, including the High School Counselors’ Receptions and the UK Book Award. She has served in all four officer positions for the club, including club president. As president, she expanded the club’s scope of service with participation in DanceBlue and “Cats for a Cause,” and has led the club with its partnership with UK on Main. Mountjoy is a 1972 graduate with a degree in education and a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association. She has four children, three of whom are UK grads.

Clements of Lexington is known for his “can do” attitude and giving spirit. He has been an integral part of the Fayette County UK Alumni Club for many years. He has given generously of his time and resources. Clements has actively participated in club activities, including its golf tournament and other efforts to raise money for scholarships. He and his wife, Lynn, have opened their home and hearts to students and “adopted” international students. Serving others is just his nature — upon retiring in 2007 after 40 years of private practice, he followed a life-long passion that led him to volunteer his dental expertise to the U.S. Army. He is a 1967 graduate with a degree in dentistry. He served on the College of Dentistry Alumni Board for many years. He and his wife, Lynn, who is also a UK grad, are Life Members of the UK Alumni Association and Fellows. They also made sure their three sons were Fellows, too.

Parsons of Lexington has served the Fayette County UK Alumni Club in many different capacities, such as serving on several committees and helping to coordinate events. While serving as president, she made significant contributions to the club, enhancing its vision and purpose. She challenged the club to improve programming, which led to increased fund-raising efforts. The club’s scholarship endowment grew under her leadership. Parsons was instrumental in establishing the Fayette County Young Alumni Group, which contributed to the resurgence of the Fayette County UK Alumni Club. She also serves as a member of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors. She is a 1991 graduate with a degree in math. She and her husband, Rick, love UK and are both Life Members of the UK Alumni Association.

White has been involved with the UK Alumni Association and his local club for over 43 years. He was instrumental in organizing the Trigg County UK Alumni Club, serving as president and member of its board of directors.  Later, when he moved to Frankfort, he became an active member in the Franklin County UK Alumni Club. He has served as the club’s vice-president, president, and on its board of directors. White has been a catalyst in bringing several initiatives to the club, including recognizing outstanding high school juniors with UK Book Awards,  students send-offs, participation in “Cats for a Cause” service project and assisted in revising the club’s bylaws. He has served on the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors, representing two different districts. He has served on the Budget, Finance & Investment, Club Development, Scholarship/Great Teacher Awards committees. An avid supporter of the university, he has served in many capacities, including as a member of the fund-raising committee for the William T. Young Library and as a member of UKAN since its inception. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in agriculture in 1958 and 1960, respectively. He and his wife, Joan, are Life Members of the UK Alumni Association. He is also a UK Fellow. 

Wallis of Indianapolis, Ind., co-founded the Central Indiana UK Alumni Club in 1978. She served as its president for two terms and currently serves on its board of directors.  Wallis has made great contributions to student recruitment by volunteering at college fairs, UK Office of Admission presentations and Senior Send-off events.  She has served on the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors, as well as serving on numerous committees, including Alumni Service Award, Club Development, Scholarship/Great Teacher Awards, Communications and Membership. Wallis is a 1969 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association. She and her husband, Robert, have three children, two of whom are also UK graduates and members of the UK Alumni Association.

UK Alumni Association Announces New Officers

The University of Kentucky Alumni Association announced a new slate of officers at its annual Board of Directors Summer Workshop in Lexington. At the helm for 2009-10 are: Scott Davis, president; Diane Massie, president-elect; Cammie DeShields Grant, treasurer, and Stan Key, secretary.

Davis of Fort Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky in 1973 and an MBA in finance from Xavier University in 1978. He is a member of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors, serving as treasurer in 2007-08, as president-elect in 2008-09, and now as president in 2009-10. He also chaired the 2009-14 Strategic Plan Committee this year. He has served as chairman of the Club Development, the Great Teacher/Scholarship and the Finance and Budget Committees. He has been an active member of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati UK Alumni Club Board of Directors, serving as president and treasurer. He received the UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2008. Davis is a partner with Tatum LLC, one of the largest financial executive services and consulting firms in the country. He has been a member of the Lions Club of Fort Thomas for 20 years, serving several terms on the board of directors, as well as president and treasurer. He also has been active in various activities supporting Highlands High School. He and his wife, Sheila, a 1975 UK graduate, are Life Members of the UK Alumni Association. They have two children, Nathan and Ethan. 

Massie of Chicago, Ill., earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kentucky in 1979. She also earned an MBA from the University of Louisville in 1983. She has served as a member of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors, as treasurer in 2006-07 and again in 2008-09, and now as president-elect in 2009-10.  Massie has chaired the Membership and Communications Committees, and was vice chair of the Group Development Committee. She was chairwoman of the 2008-09 Long Range Financial Planning Committee and served on the committee to develop the 2009-2014 Strategic Plan. Massie also served on the 2005 and 2010 UK Alumni Association Hall of Distinguished Alumni Committee. She has been president of the Greater Chicago UK Alumni Club and has served on its board of directors. She has assisted the UK Office of Admission with student recruiting in the Chicago area and provided leadership in the funding of a scholarship for Chicago area students attending UK.  Massie was a recipient of the UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2005. She is currently a senior marketing manager with Cars.com. She is a Life Member of the UK Alumni Association and is a UK Fellow. She serves on the Advisory Committee for the Integrated Strategic Communications program in the UK College of Communications and Information Studies.

Grant of Winchester earned an associate degree in human services from Lexington Community College in 1977 and a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky in 1979. She is a member of the UK Alumni Association Board of Directors. She has served as chairwoman of the Great Teacher/Scholarship, Club Development and the Nominating for Board of Directors Committees. Grant has served the Clark County UK Alumni Club in various capacities, including as a member of its board of directors, vice president and president. She was a recipient of the UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2006. She is employed by the Clark County Board of Education as a speech/language pathologist. She and her husband, William, are Life Members of the UK Alumni Association.

Key of Lexington earned a degree in education from the University of Kentucky in 1972. He also earned a master’s degree in education from Murray State University in 1977. He is the director of UK alumni affairs and serves as executive director and secretary of the UK Alumni Association.  He has been employed with the association for 20 years and was named the director in 1998. He received the UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2004. Key played basketball at UK from 1968-1972 and was co-captain of Coach Adolph Rupp’s final team. Key and his wife, Mary Jane, a 1972 UK graduate, are Life Members of the UK Alumni Association and UK Fellows. They have two sons, Ryan, a 2000 UK grad, and Neil, a 2004 UK grad.

Best Seller By Kim Edwards Still Popular After Two Years

     Kim Edwards, assistant professor of English at UK, has said that one of the pleasures of writing “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” was uncovering the resilience that develops in the novel’s characters as they found themselves in situations they did not understand. Her expertise at crafting this story – about a doctor delivering his twins during a snowstorm, discovering that one had Down’s syndrome and sending the child to an institution, all the while telling his wife that the child died at birth – was what propelled the book to a huge success, reaching the New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly, and Book Sense best seller lists. The novel also is being published in 40 other countries.

     Edwards has been interested in telling stories all of her life, so writing a successful novel is like the ultimate culmination of a natural inclination. Story telling is simply part of her.

     “I have a clear memory of my very first story. I told it to my mother and she wrote it down because I was too young to write. It was a very moralistic tale about an eagle and a worm,” she says. “But it had a happy ending.”

     Edwards is a native of Texas and grew up in Skaneateles, N.Y. She was graduated from Colgate University and the University of Iowa, where she received her master’s degree in fiction and linguistics. Traveling to Asia with her husband (Thomas Clayton, now head of the English department at UK), she enjoyed five years of teaching in Malyasia, Japan and Cambodia and began publishing short stories while overseas. One f these, "Sky Juice,” won the Nelson Algren Award, while others appeared in notable periodicals and also won honors, including a National Magazine Award for Excellence in Fiction and a Pushcart Prize, as well as inclusion in The Best American Short Stories. Her book, “The Secret of a Fire King,” also was recently issued in the United States.

     Before coming to UK in 2002, she taught in the MFA program at Warren Wilson College and at Washington University. She usually teaches creative writing classes, but currently on a one year sabbatical from UK.

     “I’m working on another novel, and even though I know more now about writing, it is still a process of starting over,” she says. “Some writers have a formula they follow, but for me, it is more about the process of discovery.”

Fayette County UK Alumni Club Honors Tom Hammond

The Fayette County UK Alumni Club and Keeneland honored internationally known sportscaster Tom Hammond, with the club’s first Hometown Hero Award.  A Lexington native, Hammond will tell you he is a “lucky guy” to do what he loves without ever having to move away from Lexington.

An alumnus of Lexington’s Lafayette High School, Hammond grew up with a passion for the University of Kentucky. His grandfather, Thomas Poe Cooper, served as dean of the College of Agriculture and an acting president of UK, and he spent a lot of time as a child growing up on UK’s campus. Hammond graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1967 with a degree in animal science. He thought the horse business was his future, but opportunity took him into a varied career from reading race results on the air and being the announcer at horse sales to calling the Kentucky Derby, National Football League and Southestern Conference basketball games, to 8 Olympics and another on his schedule. He is also the voice of the University of Kentucky’s “seeblue.” signature campaign.

He began his career in broadcasting with WVLK Radio, where he was news and sports director. Hammond was next sports director for WLEX-TV. In 1980, he was named a play-by-play announcer for Southeastern Conference basketball games which he called with Rupp’s Runt Larry Conley through the 2008-2009 season. Hammond joined NBC Sports in 1984, and continues to be one of NBC's most widely used and popular commentators.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he served as a sales announcer at the Keeneland Thoroughbred Sales and at thoroughbred horse sales in 16 other states. He is recognized as a specialist and national expert on thoroughbred pedigrees. Along with his famous call of the Kentucky Derby, Hammond can be heard on NBC’s coverage of the winter and summer Olympics, the National Football League and Notre Dame Football.

He was the first recipient of the annual Outstanding Kentuckian Award given by the A.B. Chandler Foundation, is a charter member of the Lafayette High School Hall of Fame, has been inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame at UK and is a member of the UK Alumni Association’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni.
