The feature story today on UKNow is a must-read, detailing the UK College of Medicine's impact on Kentucky's economy. You can read the entire story by clicking here. Here is one snippet from the story that shows how important the College is to the Commonwealth:

In total, 2,730 UK College of Medicine alumni are currently practicing across the Commonwealth, generating $6.3 billion annually into Kentucky’s economy and creating at least 49,140 jobs, according to UK’s Office of Health Research and Development.

An amazing statistic from an amazing college!

As University of Kentucky and Cornell University fans gear up for tonight's Sweet 16 battle in Syracuse, students from each school were teaming up for a great cause. Katy Bennett from UK's Office of Public Relations and Marketing recently posted the following story on our news site, UKNow. I've copied and pasted it below. Enjoy!

On the day their teams take to the hardwood, students from the University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program and Cornell University put their rivalry aside to help Lexington's Habitat for Humanity.

Students from Cornell have been in town all week during their spring break as part of the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge Program. Collegiate Challenge is a year-round alternative break program that offers groups of five or more students, 16 years of age and older, the opportunity to visit one of the 250 host affiliates throughout the United States. Students spend one week working in partnership with the local affiliate, the local community and partner families to help eliminate poverty housing in the area.

UK's Robinson Scholars, a scholarship and support service program that works with first-generation college students from 29 Eastern Kentucky counties, volunteer throughout the Lexington community each semester and also signed up to work with Habitat for Humanity this week.

"What a coincidence, one that we could have never predicted, that students from Cornell would be in Lexington on the day that UK and Cornell meet in the Sweet Sixteen," Rachel Childress, executive director of Lexington Habitat for Humanity, said. "We are so happy to have collegiate students involved in Habitat."

UK and Cornell students worked side by side measuring and cutting boards that will be used in framing a new house tomorrow. While a few "C-A-T-S cats, cats, cats" and "Let's Go Red" cheers broke out among the groups, the friendly rivalry was much more about helping people than dunking or three-point shooting percentages.

It is a clip from an interview conducted with Dr. Joe Labianca, an award-winning professor in our Gatton College of Business and Economics. Professor Labianca took the time to recognize the academic excellence he has encountered here at the University. I think you will enjoy his comments. Click here to listen to the brief interview.

Congratulations to Lesley Mann, a UK senior from Calhoun, Kentucky, for being named a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She was one of only 29 students in the nation to receive this prestigious honor, which will allow Lesley to pursue her graduate education at the world-renowned University of Cambridge.

Since arriving on our campus, Lesley has been one of our very top scholars. Prior to being named a Gates Scholar, Lesley received the Beckman Fellowship and Goldwater Scholarship.

There is a great feature about Lesley's success in today's Lexington Herald-Leader. Click here to read more about this young Kentuckian who is competing with some of the best and brightest in the world.
