UK Goes Tobacco-Free Today Login to comment

The University of Kentucky became a tobacco-free campus community today, coinciding with the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout. As the state's flagship university, I believe it is UK's inherent responsibility to help create a healthier environment for all members of the campus community. The tobacco-free policy places a priority on employees, guests, and students by providing a healthy, tobacco-free environment that decreases exposure to secondhand smoke.

While I am sure we will have our critics, I assure you that we did not make this decision because it was the politically popular thing to do. And it will not be the easiest thing to do. But it is the right thing to do for our campus and our Commonwealth.

I thank all of the members of our campus community who have agreed to partner with us on this effort.
